ICOM Europe / ICOM-Greece's Embracing the virtual: European museums respond to the digital challenge

On the occasion of the 10-year anniversary of the new Acropolis Museum, ICOM Europe and ICOM Greece jointly organised a conference that looked into the embedding of digital practices in the museum world (21-22 November 2019, Athens). “Embracing the virtual: European museums respond to the digital challenge” was a two-day conference that aimed to address the opportunities and challenges arising from the implementation of new technologies and methods (e.g., 3D reconstructions, virtual and augmented reality, multimodal interactive systems) in the cultural sector. One of the EMOTIVE partners, Maria Roussou (ATHENA) presented a keynote titled: "Extending the virtual: the museum as a hybrid experience". Download/view full programme here.

Games and Learning Alliance conference

The Games and Learning Alliance conference is an international conference dedicated to the science and application of serious games. The conference aims at bringing together researchers, developers, practitioners and stakeholders. The goal is to share the state of the art of research and market, analysing the most significant trends and discussing visions on the future of serious games. One of the EMOTIVE partners, Maria Roussou (ATHENA) was invited to give a keynote titled "Immersive Games for Culture: from Representation to Experience". The conference took place in Athens on 27-29 November 2019. Read more about the keynote here.

New Narratives for Cultural Heritage: 3D and Immersive Experiences

4th Cultural Heritage day on “New Narratives for Cultural Heritage: 3D and Immersive Experiences” organised by the Catalan Cultural Heritage Agency, 30 October 2019, Barcelona. The University of Glasgow EMOTIVE team was invited to present the project’s innovations at this event and although they couldn’t attend physically (as this coincides with the date of the EMOTIVE public demo event in Glasgow), they submitted to the related competitions videos of the two Hunterian experiences, “Ebutius’s Dilemma” and “Views on Verecunda’s Life”. These were both selected to be included in the Heritage and Technology playlist on their YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/user/patrimonigencatwhile “Views on Verecunda’s Life” was also selected by the Jury to be shown in the afternoon seminar on the 30th October 2019.

Glasgow Digital Cultural Heritage Showcase

EMOTIVE was presented as part of the Glasgow Digital Cultural Heritage Showcase organised on 8 October 2019 as part of the Smithsonian Institution Delegation visit to UGLA (following a Memorandum of Understanding signed between the two organisations in 2018). This was organised by the Glasgow Digital Cultural Heritage Network (supported by the UGLA Arts Lab).

Association of Scottish Visitor Attractions (ASVA)

The UGLA team was invited to present the EMOTIVE innovations and tools at a sold-out event on Immersive Experiences - AR, VR and Visitor Expectations in the Attractions Sector (1 October 2019) with over 70 participants from the cultural, creative, and tourism industries sectors (related blog written up after the event).

Our team member and Assistant Professor of the University of Athens, Dr Maria Roussou, was one of the two keynote speakers of the main ICOM Greece celebration, which took place at the OTE Museum of Telecommunications in Athens on 18 May 2018. Maria Roussou presented, among others, the value of emotions to promote engagement with cultural heritage and presented EMOTIVE and its objectives..

Explorathon: Researchers’ Night Scotland

During the Explorathon – Explorathon – Researchers’ Night Scotland, at the University of Glasgow on 29 September 2017, the visitors to the Hunterian’s Antonine Wall were testing new digital stories and learning about the EMOTIVE research, museum objects and Roman history, and participated in the story-design process assisting researchers from our University of Glasgow team.
